UnderstandingEnneagram Character Styles as a Therapeutic Tool

With Carolyn Bartlett, LCSW: Feb 22–23, 2004 Grand Junction, Colorado

Part 1: Sunday 8:45 – 11:15 Understanding the basics; Part II, Sunday 1:00- 5:00 and Monday 9:45 –12:00; Part III Monday 1:00-5:00 (Three part workshop—Attendees will understand better this content if they have a basic understanding of the Enneagram to attend Part II and Part III.)

The Enneagram provides a psychological map of personality and insight into behavior and positive motivations with roots in several spiritual traditions.  This tool may be applied to any psychotherapy model. This workshop will provide an overview of this personality system, including its nine basic character styles. Self-observation about one’s own style can be gained while learning to understand others.
Part One: Will provide a basic understanding of the Enneagram personality system.
Part Two: Will apply the understanding of Enneagram personality styles to treatment. This will include a more in-depth examination of how different styles present for treatment, common childhood wounds, defensive styles, common mistakes therapists make as well as what is reported to be effective in promoting therapeutic change.
Part Three: Will apply the above insights to practice.  Genograms of simulated clients, role-play and audience participation will be utilized to examine possible treatment approaches, merging insights from the Enneagram.

FORT COLLINS SPRING 2004 ENNEAGRAM PANEL SERIES

In keeping with the Oral Tradition of teaching the Enneagram, we will be offering a series of nine Monday night panels, March 22 through May 17.  Panelists who are good self-observers and are willing to help others understand the world-view represented by their Enneagram personality type will be interviewed each evening.  Connecting points, and as time allows, sub-types will be demonstrated. The Enneagram is a system for understanding our personality and seeing through to the essence of our selves and others. It has roots in several spiritual traditions.  It is a tool for both psychological and spiritual transformation.  While it offers great depth, it is easily accessible on many levels.  Interest has been revitalized today because of its profound insights that are applicable to understanding our selves, our personal and work relationships and our spiritual growth.

Therapists Enneagram Consultation Group:

We find therapists are often excited to learn the Enneagram because it makes such intuitive sense. Therapists and counselors who attend our workshops and panels have asked us for more training to apply the Enneagram once they understand the basics.  In response, an Enneagram consultation group for therapists is now forming.  We plan to gather therapists and counselors with diverse backgrounds representing different Enneagram styles for peer consultation.   This offers the therapists the opportunity to learn from colleagues what clients who share a common Enneagram style might wish you understood as a therapist.  We will use Genogram family maps, role-play and group consultation to brainstorm and learn how to best meet our clients needs.

The Enneagram can be applied to enhance any treatment model and this will provide an opportunity to share with each other the expertise each brings to this eclectic group.   We hope to develop a network of practitioners who have an interest in the Enneagram and interest and expertise in different treatment modalities and approaches.  We will facilitate the group and share our resources and expertise from extensive Enneagram work and clinical experience.

We are tentatively planning to begin with a two-hour consultation group, once or twice a month.  When we have 5-6 therapists or counselors who can come we will begin.  Let us know if you would like to be a part of this by emailing us at thipt@verinet.com.

This will be facilitated by John Reynolds, LCSW and Carolyn Bartlett, LCSW
The cost will be $25 a session.
